INTRODUCTION TO ARCHWAY GIRL POWER

Archway Table Tennis Club have an incredible line up of top female table tennis players as detailed in the photo. We are committed to attracting more girls/women and retaining them at our club. We understand that girls often experience different motivations, emotions and barriers to boys when it comes to taking part in sport in general but most certainly in our sport and the participation stats would back this up. We understand that women and girls are individual groups and shouldn’t be treated as the same. Understanding the barriers in female participation in sport allows us to take a different approach. This can have a positive impact on improving participation, welcoming and retaining more girls to our club. As above, we have a great female team, the best in the UK and the very fact these girls are achieving at such as high standard will allow us to inspire the next generation. As well as this, we have a full time female coach with a proven track record of the development of female table tennis players. For any parents reading this, please remember that whilst these girls pictured are the best in the UK and amongst Europe’s elite, they started out as beginners just like your children.

We have found that the boys who have been involved in our club have higher levels of confidence. One of the attributes that our high achieving girls team have is self-confidence which has been developed over years of involvement of table tennis, and we want all of our players to have this regardless of gender.

At Archway, we believe that It is a myth that “boys are more interested in sports than girls” – We know that girls are just as interested in sports and we provide an opportunity to girls to express themselves through the sport of table tennis.

Introduction to Archway "Mixed Sessions"

At Archway, we have genders specific sessions as well as mixed sessions. The reason for this is that if the standard between a boy and girl comparable, it makes sense to group them so both can benefit. Historically in sport, young girls would only play sport with other girls, regardless of the age difference between them. In sport, and most certainly in the sport of table tennis, at Archway, we adopt mixed-sex sessions led by our coaches, so children are not necessarily categorised by their gender, but by age or playing standard and ability.

We have found at Archway that mixed sessions have contributed to the two genders, improving tolerance and has promoted mutual respect. In the above videos you will see how a competitive match between boys and girls has maintained competitiveness, whilst both genders retaining respect and admiration for one another’s skill and ability.

Thanks

Gareth
